Privacy

FriendRing is an app for keeping up with the people who matter to you. This page says what it does with your information. The rules for using the app are in the Terms.

The short version
#

  • Everything you put into the app stays on your phone.
  • There is no account, no sign-in and no server. We never receive your friends, your notes, your photos or anything else.
  • No ads, no analytics, no tracking. We do not sell data, because we have none.
  • The app itself does not send or receive anything over the internet. If you buy the unlock, the payment goes through your phone’s store, not through us.

What the app keeps, and where
#

The app keeps what you enter and what you do in it:

  • the people you add, with their names and, if you give them, their birthdays and other dates such as an anniversary
  • a photo for a person, if you choose one
  • the circles they are in, including circles you make yourself, and the goals you set
  • your check-ins, with the kind of contact, the day and any note you write
  • the “things to remember” note for each person
  • your progress and milestones, which are worked out from your check-ins
  • your settings, such as the time of the daily reminder, the theme and whether the app lock is on
  • whether you have unlocked the full version, and when (the app learns this from your store and keeps it so that it works without a connection)

All of it is stored in the app’s own storage on your phone. It is not copied anywhere else by the app.

Your contacts
#

You can add people by typing a name, which needs no permission at all.

If you choose to pick people from your contacts, your phone asks for your permission first. The app then reads the names in your contacts so it can show you the list to pick from. For the people you pick, and only for them, it keeps their name, their birthday if the contact has one, and the reference your phone uses for that contact. The rest of the list is not kept.

The app never changes your contacts, and nothing from them leaves your phone.

Photos
#

A person in the app can have a photo instead of initials. You choose it yourself, in one of two ways:

  • from your phone’s photo picker, which hands the app the one picture you pick and nothing else, so the app never sees the rest of your gallery
  • from the picture already saved with that contact, if you added the person from your contacts

The picture you choose is made smaller and copied into the app’s own storage. It stays on your phone. The app does not use the camera or the microphone.

Calls
#

When a person was added from your contacts, the app can offer a call button. Tapping it reads that contact’s phone number at that moment and opens your phone’s own calling screen with the number filled in. Your phone places the call, not the app. The app does not store phone numbers, and it does not see your call history or know whether the call happened: it asks you afterwards.

Locking the app
#

If you turn on Lock app, the app asks your phone’s own Face ID, fingerprint or screen lock to open, every time you leave and come back. The app learns only whether the phone said yes. It never sees your face, your fingerprint or your passcode, and it has no separate PIN. While the lock is on, the app switcher shows a blank card instead of the app, and on Android the phone does not allow screenshots of the app. The lock keeps other people out of the app on your phone. It does not encrypt what the app keeps.

Reminders
#

The daily reminder is created on your phone, by your phone. No message is sent to you from anywhere else, and nobody else knows that you were reminded or about whom.

Your phone asks for your permission before the app may show reminders. You can turn them off at any time, in the app or in your phone’s settings.

A reminder can show a first name on your lock screen or in your notifications. Your phone’s own settings decide what notifications show while it is locked. With Lock app and Hide names turned on in the app, reminders name no one.

The home screen widget
#

If you add the app’s widget to your home screen, it shows how many people you could catch up with and, for some of them, a first name. Anyone who can see your home screen can see that. The widget reads a short summary the app keeps on your phone; it sends nothing anywhere. If you would rather not show names there, turn on Lock app and Hide names in the app, which takes the names off the widget, or do not add the widget, or remove it.

Backups
#

The app can make a backup file when you ask for one. The file holds what is listed above, except photos: they stay on the phone, and after a restore people show their initials until you choose a photo again. You decide where the file goes: your files, a drive, or a message to yourself. We do not receive it.

Unless you add a passphrase, the backup file is readable text and is not encrypted. Anyone who has the file can read it, so keep it somewhere you trust.

You can add a passphrase where you export. The file is then sealed with it, and only the passphrase opens it. The app never keeps your passphrase, not on the phone and not in the file, so we cannot recover it either: a backup whose passphrase is forgotten stays closed.

What the app does not do
#

  • It has no advertising.
  • It has no analytics and does not track what you do.
  • It does not share or sell anything, because it has nothing of yours to share or sell.
  • It does not read your messages, your call history, your location or your photo gallery.
  • It does not use the camera or the microphone.

Removing your information
#

“Erase everything” in the app’s settings removes all people, goals, notes, photos and check-ins from the app. Removing the app from your phone does the same.

Because we hold nothing about you, there is nothing for us to look up, correct or delete on our side.

The app stores and the unlock
#

You get the app from Apple’s App Store or from Google Play. Those companies handle the download and keep their own records of it under their own privacy policies. We receive no information that identifies you from them.

The app is free for 10 people. A one-time payment unlocks more. It is made in the store’s own payment screen, and the store handles the payment under its own terms and privacy policy. We have no account system and no server, so the purchase belongs to your store account, and we do not see who bought. The app asks the store, on your phone, whether the unlock was bought, so that it can be brought back on a new phone with “Restore purchase”.

Children
#

The app is not aimed at children, and it collects no information from anyone.
